Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a CELPIP score and a CLB level?

CELPIP scores map 1:1 to CLB levels — CELPIP 9 equals CLB 9, CELPIP 7 equals CLB 7, and so on from 1 to 12. This direct mapping makes CELPIP simpler to interpret for Express Entry than IELTS, which requires a separate conversion table.

How many CRS points does CELPIP 9 give for Express Entry?

CELPIP 9 (CLB 9) gives 31 CRS points per skill for a single applicant — 124 points total across all four skills (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking). This is the threshold that earns the maximum single-skill language points for single applicants. CELPIP 10 and above gives 34 points per skill (136 total).

Do CRS language points change if I have a spouse?

Yes — when you have a spouse or common-law partner, the CRS language formula changes. Your own first official language gives 6 points per skill at CLB 9+ (24 total), compared to 31 per skill (124 total) for a single applicant. Your spouse's language score adds separate points under Spouse Factors.

What CELPIP score do I need to meet the FSW minimum?

Federal Skilled Worker (FSW) requires CLB 7 in all four skills — CELPIP 7 in Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. Canadian Experience Class (CEC) also requires CLB 7. Scores below 7 in any skill make you ineligible for these Express Entry streams.

Can I combine scores from different CELPIP test sittings?

No. IRCC requires all four skill scores (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking) to come from a single test session. You cannot submit your Reading from one attempt and Speaking from another. If you want to improve one skill, you must retake the full test.
