CELPIP CLB 9 Study Roadmap: Diagnose, Repair, Simulate

A CLB 9 study plan works best when it is built around evidence from your own performance, not a fixed number of hours or a generic daily checklist.

For CELPIP-General, a CELPIP level of 9 in an ability maps to CLB 9 in that ability. If your target is CLB 9 across Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking, treat those as four separate performance targets.

Phase 1 — Diagnose

Take one realistic full mock test under normal timing. Do not pause to study between sections.

Record:

  • Listening accuracy by Part 1–6;
  • Reading accuracy by Part 1–4;
  • Writing weaknesses by Content/Coherence, Vocabulary, Readability, and Task Fulfillment;
  • Speaking weaknesses by Content/Coherence, Vocabulary, Listenability, and Task Fulfillment.

Your goal is not to prove that you are ready. Your goal is to find the two or three repeatable weaknesses that deserve most of your study time.

Phase 2 — Repair the weakest task types

Spend several sessions on the lowest-performing tasks rather than immediately repeating another full mock.

Examples:

  • weak Listening Part 5 → speaker/viewpoint tracking;
  • weak Reading Part 3 → paragraph mapping and paraphrase;
  • weak Writing Task 1 → task fulfillment and idea development;
  • weak Speaking Task 7 → sustained opinion development and pacing.

Use the dedicated Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking practice areas.

Phase 3 — Move from accuracy to timing

Once your method works without severe time pressure, reintroduce realistic timers.

The goal is to preserve the same reasoning process when the clock is active. If accuracy collapses only under timing, the problem is now pacing rather than understanding.

Phase 4 — Simulate

Return to a full CELPIP mock test. Compare it with the first diagnostic.

Ask:

  • Did the weakest part improve?
  • Did a new bottleneck appear?
  • Did fatigue affect later sections?
  • Did Writing or Speaking become rushed after Listening/Reading?

Use those answers to plan the next cycle.

A simple weekly structure

Day 1: full or partial diagnostic.
Day 2: weakest task type.
Day 3: second-weakest task type.
Day 4: productive skill review — Writing or Speaking.
Day 5: timed mixed practice.
Day 6: error review and retakes with new prompts.
Day 7: lighter review or complete simulation depending on readiness.

Do not take a full mock every day simply to collect scores. The targeted work between simulations is what should change the next result.
