CELPIP Speaking · Task 2

Talking about a Personal Experience

Practise CELPIP Speaking Task 2 personal experiences with chronological storytelling, specific detail, reactions and a clear ending.

What this task is really testing

Personal Experience is a short storytelling task. A strong response gives the listener a clear situation, sequence of events, relevant detail and reaction instead of producing a collection of unrelated memories.

Choose one experience quickly and build a simple story arc: context → important event → what happened next → result → feeling or lesson. Specific sensory or situational detail can make the story clear, but every detail should support the narrative.

Your practice target

Record one fresh Task 2 response with a complete beginning, middle and ending. During review, check whether a listener could retell the main event in the same order after hearing you once.

A repeatable approach

1

Choose the first workable memory

Do not waste preparation time searching for the perfect story. Pick an experience that gives you a clear sequence and enough detail to develop.

2

Anchor time and place

A short context statement tells the listener when, where and with whom the event happened. Then move quickly into the main event.

3

Use sequence plus reaction

Connect events with natural transitions and include what you thought, felt or learned. Reaction adds meaning beyond a list of actions.

Focused drill

Pick a simple prompt and write only five keywords for the story arc. Record using those keywords without scripting full sentences. Repeat with a new memory and compare which transitions help the story stay chronological.

Common mistakes

  • Spending too long deciding which experience to use.
  • Giving background for most of the response and rushing the actual event.
  • Jumping between times so the sequence becomes unclear.
  • Adding unrelated details because they are easy to remember.

Review after every attempt

  • Is the setting clear without excessive background?
  • Can I identify the main event and its sequence?
  • Did I include relevant reactions or consequences?
  • Are transitions natural rather than repetitive?
  • Does the story reach a clear ending?

Progress signal

How to know the practice is transferring

You are improving when you can choose a memory quickly and deliver a coherent story from context to outcome without scripting or losing chronology.

Frequently asked questions

Does the personal experience have to be completely true?

Your preparation should focus on producing a coherent, relevant response. Do not waste limited preparation time trying to recall perfect details; choose a clear experience you can explain naturally.

How do I stop running out of things to say?

Use a story arc with context, event, development, result and reaction. Each stage gives the response a clear next step without requiring filler.

What details are useful in a personal story?

Use details that clarify the setting, problem, action, result or reaction. Remove details that do not help the listener understand why the event mattered.
