CELPIP vs Duolingo English Test (2026)

The Duolingo English Test is cheaper, faster, and taken from home. CELPIP is the one that actually gets you Canadian permanent residency. Here is what each test does — and what it cannot do.

Important: The Duolingo English Test (DET) is NOT accepted by IRCC for Canadian permanent residency. For Express Entry, PNP, or any PR stream, you must take CELPIP General or IELTS General Training.

What you need to know about DET for Canada

DET is not accepted by IRCC for any permanent residency stream

IRCC's approved English language tests for immigration purposes are CELPIP General and IELTS General Training. The Duolingo English Test does not appear on this list. You cannot use a DET score for an Express Entry application, a Provincial Nominee Program, or any other permanent residency pathway. If Canadian PR is your goal, you must take CELPIP or IELTS — there is no workaround.

DET is widely accepted for university admissions

The Duolingo English Test has become a mainstream alternative to IELTS and TOEFL for university admissions globally. Many Canadian universities accept it for undergraduate and graduate admissions. If you are applying to a Canadian university and need an English certification for that purpose only (not for the immigration application), DET may save you significant money and time.

DET's at-home format is a convenience advantage — and an integrity risk

DET is taken at home using AI proctoring. This is cheaper and more convenient than travelling to a test centre. However, some institutions give DET results slightly less weight than proctored tests precisely because of concerns about at-home test security. For immigration purposes this distinction is moot since DET is not accepted — but it is worth knowing when comparing for academic applications.

FAQ

Can I use Duolingo for a Canadian student visa?

Your Canadian study permit (student visa) is issued by IRCC based on your school's acceptance — not on a separate language test you submit to IRCC. Many Canadian universities accept DET for admissions. If your university admits you using a DET score, IRCC will process your study permit based on that acceptance letter. So indirectly, yes — but DET is satisfying the university's requirement, not IRCC's.

Is DET easier to get a high score on than CELPIP?

DET's adaptive format and shorter test time make it feel different. Some find the conversational speaking tasks less stressful than CELPIP's structured 8-task Speaking component. Others find CELPIP's predictable format easier to prepare for since the question types never change. Neither is objectively easier — preparation approach matters more than inherent difficulty.

What if I take DET and get a great score — can I then skip CELPIP?

Not if you need language proof for Canadian immigration. A DET score — even a perfect 160 — cannot be submitted to IRCC for a PR application. You will still need to sit CELPIP or IELTS. Think of them as serving completely different purposes.

Does the Duolingo app prepare you for CELPIP?

The Duolingo language learning app (separate from the Duolingo English Test) builds general vocabulary and reading comprehension, which has some transfer value. But the CELPIP test has highly specific question formats — particularly in Listening (Parts 3–6) and Writing (email and survey tasks) — that require targeted preparation beyond general English study. Use official CELPIP practice materials, not the Duolingo app, to prepare.
