Pillar 1
CELPIP Reading — Score 12
The Reading component is 47–53 minutes and 38 questions across 4 task types. Speed and elimination technique beat vocabulary every time.
Read the questions first
Before reading the passage, scan every question. You are not reading to understand — you are reading to find. Knowing what to look for cuts your active reading time by 40%.
The scan-and-confirm method
Skim the paragraph headings and first sentences to build a mental map. When a question triggers a memory, go back and confirm with a focused 5-second re-read. Never re-read an entire passage.
Eliminate first, choose second
For every question, cross out the two clearly wrong options before comparing the remaining two. This alone raises accuracy because you stop talking yourself into wrong answers.
Time pacing: 28 minutes, 38 questions
You have roughly 44 seconds per question. Flag anything that takes more than 60 seconds and move on immediately. Come back at the end — unanswered questions cost the same as wrong ones.
Diagram and graph questions
These are the fastest points. The answer is almost always stated in one label, axis title, or caption. Look for numbers and units first; everything else is noise.
Viewpoints passages: track the author
These passages present a position the author is arguing. Questions test whether you can distinguish 'what the author claims' from 'what a cited source says'. Underline the author's own words.
